These staff members work with TAP students to support their vocational goals and performance outcomes while working in a vocational internship on or near campus. Job coaches can provide assistance with training on the job, support job retention, conduct performance evaluations, and assist with goal setting, monitoring and achievement.
TAP employs hourly student workers, preferably graduate students, who work up to 20 hours per week. Life coaches facilitate TAP student's goal achievement specifically related to their social life and independence. Life coaches work a flexible schedule, communicate weekly regarding student progress towards goals, and attend staff meetings. Life coaches meet weekly with students assigned to caseload typically between They complete Independent Living Assessments with the assigned cohort twice per month and provide thorough notes documenting their ongoing meeting and progress with students.
They live on campus, engage in paid or unpaid internships, enroll in UC electives and take specialized program courses focused on developing self-determination, career skills and increasing social capital. With the help from TAP staff and faculty, she took courses, worked in internships and made community connections to achieve her goal of having a career as an office assistant post-graduation. Eve was the first TAP intern and she thrived in this environment mastering clerical tasks and becoming part of the team. During the spring of , Weinbrandt contacted Moore as well as James Whalen, director of public safety and chief of police with UCPD, about future internships and the potential of creating a staff position to hire Eve full-time after graduation. They loved this idea and could not wait to welcome her back to the UCPD team.
What better way to increase independence and engage in a vibrant community! TAP students have multiple opportunities to work in internships, engage in career exploration, and ultimately gain meaningful employment. TAP students are UC students first and learning is a priority.
